Bilic and his tactics
We have still had a great start to the season but its not the first time his tactics have baffled many although the players are a large part of the problem aswell.

Sakho on the wing is both a waste of his ability and also as he wants to stay forward his not going to give Jenkinson the cover needed as he is a born striker. Moses same problem but i put him down as lazy.

Kouyate for me not a holding midfield player we have seen many times him and Noble just does not work in there. It's to slow in there, no pressing.

Lanzini the shining light now without Payet but think put him back wide get him in 1 on 1 situations like the goal yesterday.

With everyone available minus payet/valencia this would be my formation/line up
..........................Adrian........

Tomkins....Reid........Ogbonna.....Cresswell...

................Song............Obiang.....

Zarate...........Kouyate..........Lanzini.....

.........................Sakho.........

Correct Sir Alf ..
Re Spurs we had a paper thin MF compared to theirs...

Neither Sakho or Mose tracked back...so FBs and MF constantly outnumbered and exposed

Completely wrong vs the strong & talented Spurs MF...in a 451 formation...

If he doesnt learn from this and other poor performances...he should be justifiably criticised...

And more importantly he should admit his errors ...

Yes it will be interesting to know how many games is deemed enough by Slaven to be seen as giving someone a chance. 3 games so far Carroll has started. Mistakes in defence too. Will Ogbonna come back in?

I think Bilic uses the "keep the shirt" system and if we are not losing games the players keep their places. However, a heavy loss for the first time and Noble now out means there could be some changes. If Obiang was fit we could respond to the defeat by popping him and Song in and against Pulis's physical teams that would be ideal. However, I think Obiang will only be considered fit enough for the bench. Song will start but may only make 60 mins. WBA will be drilled to give us and Song particularly, no time on the ball.

It will be interesting this weekend for sure. Will Bilic stick or twist?

Depends on the circumstances. As has been pointed out, our best chance against Spurs was probably to provide decent ball into the box for Carroll. As it was, we were unable to do this.

My preferred system would have been to play Lanzini wide and bring in a central midfielder to shore up the middle. That said, the way we played on Sunday, it's unlikely it would have made the blindest bit of difference.

Re: Bilic and his tactics
Well we all know now why Rodgers wanted rid of AC. He changes the whole dynamic of the game but managers have to be consistent to keep players on their side.

AC is our top paid player and record signing. He has been out injured and we've taken our time getting him back but he deserved a run to show how he can fit into Bilic's team. AC hasn't done that effectively and has actually been poor with a number of individual errors as well.

Bilic now has an opportunity after a 4-1 thrashing to put things right. If he doesn't then fans, directors and players on the fringe will start to question him. Mind you no-one has patience these days. I think Bilic being questioned would have happened with the last few results even if AC hadn't been playing.

SA went through the same problems trying to fit AC and KN into the side and never got it right. I think Bilic is far smarter than SA.

Re: Bilic and his tactics
To be honest I can't think of any situation where I would have Sahko and Carroll on the pitch together bar a last minute free for all when we are throwing balls into the box with the other team sitting back.
They should never start together
Simple innit

Opinions as always, but while we may have had what looked on paper like 5 midfielders, Sakho is not a midfielder by trade and was playing in a very advanced role. That said, he did more defensive covering than Moses or Lanzini at corners and getting back at times but we were not matching up with them. There were other problems as mentioned like Moses who is good at times on the ball but does not do too much pressing and covering when he does not have it. Throw in Noble's lack of pace and Carroll's lack of movement. Combined these led to us being dominated in the middle of the park as the possession stats suggested.

But the choice of Sakho and Carroll, while you can understand what the thinking was, backfired as it left us light in midfield. IMO of course :-)

Re: Bilic and his tactics
What BLW said.

I've read loads of posters saying we were short in midfield.

Tottenham played 3 central midfielders and 2 wingers, and so did we.

I can't get my head around how people can watch the game and think otherwise.

Re: Bilic and his tactics
Alf

we weren't short in midfield, Sakho played wide as part of the attacking three midfielders.

I can see why he thought playing Carroll might have been a decent tactic, purely based on Spurs looking vulnerable to crosses and high balls against Arsenal (Giroud should've had a hat-trick had he bothered to turn up for that game). But, we didnt play to Carroll's strength. For me AC should be on the bench and come on towards the end of the game if we want to change tactics and get balls into the box for him. he isn't a starter for me.

Re: Bilic and his tactics
All comes down to who was available (Song not fit, Payet out, Obinag out) and recognising in away games especially the strengths of the opposition and matching them.

Accomodating Carroll is at the heart of the problem. I just do not understand why he thought leaving us one short in midfield (4 versus 5) against what is one of the very best midfields in the league, would work?

Ok we are a bunch of Armchair numpties on a web site but the majority called it before the game started. Forget Carroll for a moment, 2 up front was suicide or at best high risk

Play the right players in their right positions don't accommodate it's standard IMO

Sakho is the best striker at the club so start with him

Re: Bilic and his tactics
I agree with Leeroy's Carroll must have it in his contract that he must play if fit.

Why else would you play him, look at the performances of the team since he back. Bring on as sub like the Chelsea game he will be more effective

Leave slaven alone' im pretty sure he knows the weak link is the defence only Reid and ogbonna and maybe Tomkins at right back are good enough .

There were errors all over the pitch. It's a shame that defenders get singled out. I think both defence and attack work and compliment each other. Barca defenders dont have to be amazing because the midfield protects them.

Take a barca defender to an average prem side and watch his stock drop as he gets singled out for error after error.

Could your Mrs have masterminded away victories at Arsenal, Liverpool and City?

There are a lot of so called experts on here claiming that they know best. It's always been the case. The reality is that they know very little.

Playing Carroll and moving Sakho out wise was not the reason we lost on Sunday. You could replay that game 10 times with Sakho up top, Carroll on the bench and another midfielder and we'd have lost it more times than not. The defensive errors cost us far more than any tactical decision. That much is obvious.

Re: Bilic and his tactics
I don't think it's a matter of abuse. There were 4 basic individual errors leading to the first 3 goals. I'm pretty sure the players involved would admit that themselves

"Whatever managers do, there's simply no way anyone can legislate for the sort of schoolboy stuff produced by Jenkinson, Reid, Tomkins & Adrian for the first three goals. "

It's a team game. The defence is getting pegged back because the forward part of the game isn't working. So the defence have to do twice as much work and are under even more scrutiny than the forwards/midfield.

The abuse Jenkinson et al is getting is unfair. It's brought on by the manager picking a line up that doesnt work.
